Obituary

Barbara E. Brenner, 78, passed away on February 9, 2025, in Bellingham, Washington.

Born on October 10, 1946, Barbara dedicated much of her life to public service, serving on the Whatcom County Council from 1991 to 2019. During her time on the council, Barbara championed environmental conservation, land-use planning, and fiscal responsibility. She was deeply committed to her community and never sought higher office, choosing instead to focus on making a difference close to home. Unaffiliated with any political party, she self-financed her election campaigns to maintain independence and avoid outside influence. Her approach was guided by a steadfast belief in fairness and justice, values she also instilled in her children.

Beyond her political career, Barbara was a devoted mother and gifted artist. She poured her creativity into her art and her love into raising her sons, encouraging them to pursue their passions with integrity and kindness. Her dedication to family was steadfast, reflected in the care and support she offered to those she loved. Whether creating art, gardening as a master gardener, or crafting confections as an amateur chocolatier, Barbara’s nurturing spirit was evident in every aspect of her life.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Ed; her sons, Wesley and Collin; and three sisters, Nancy, Patrica, and Susan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Elinor; and her brother, George.

A private graveside service was held, and a celebration of Barbara’s life will take place on May 17, 2025, at Greenacres Memorial Park.

Barbara’s unwavering devotion to her family and community left an indelible mark on those who knew her. May her memory continue to inspire compassion and service in others.
