Coping With Grief: How to Write Your Deceased Loved One a Letter

When you are grieving the loss of your loved one after their cremation service in Ferndale, WA., you may feel like nothing will help ease the pain. While it is true that there is not one magic thing to take all the feelings of sadness and loss away, there are things you can do to help work through these feelings. One of these being wiring a letter to your loved one.

Taking pen to paper has been shown to help with many things including depression, healing from trauma, and coping with grief. There is something almost magical about letting your thoughts out and onto the paper. If you are not comfortable with this idea or not sure where to start, let us help.

Tips to Begin

When you are ready to write your letter, it’s important you find a nice, comfortable, and quiet space. The ideal space is one where you are alone and won’t be interrupted or distracted. If you are at home, you can make a cozier spot for yourself but cuddling up with a warm blanket or sipping on a nice hot cup of tea while writing.

The next tip is to use paper and pen or pencil. Yes, you could type it out on your computer or smartphone, but there is something lost in that. Using your hand and physically writing out the words and thoughts helps you connect with them on a much deeper level.

The last tip is to let go of any judgement or expectations. Don’t hold yourself to any preconceived notions of what this letter is going to be. It’s fine to have a general idea of what you would like to write but be open to change if the letter takes another direction. You may find that once you start writing, it becomes something different than what you imagined.

What to Write

This letter is a chance for you to talk once again to your loved one. What you write about is between you and them; no one else. This is wonderful in that it gives you the freedom to write whatever is truly on your heart. If you need some ideas for inspiration to get started, you could write about:

  • One of your favorite memories you have of them
  • Any events (big or small) that have happened since their passing
  • Any ways you have grown since their death
  • Something you regret not saying to them while they were alive
  • All the ways they touched your life and what you will remember
  • The many reasons they were so special to you

After You Write the Letter

Once the letter is complete you may wonder what you should do with it. The answer is to do whatever feels right. You could decide to seal it in an envelope and keep it in a secure, private place. Other options could be that you share it with a close friend or post it anonymously in an online forum. You could also burn or bury the letter as a way of letting go.

Whatever you decide, writing a letter like this to your loved one after their cremation service in Ferndale, WA., can be a wonderful way to help work though some of the grief.
